Local Authorities Organising Elections & Make Your Mark

We understand every Local Authority are running MYP elections and/or Make Your Mark slightly differently in 2024. Which ever approach you decide to take we've created resources to support and guide you.

For MYP elections, the first decision to be made is if you will elect through a direct LA-wide election. Or, through an indirect election from within a youth council, who are themselves elected through an LA wide election

Resources for joint direct MYP Elections and Make Your Mark (where both votes are held at the same time/using the same ballot paper)

Background information and at-a-glance dates for running joint MYP elections and Make Your Mark. This will mean a direct election for MYPs and Make Your Mark, will happen at the same time. Usually using a ballot paper with MYP candidates on one side and Make Your Mark topics on the reverse.

Including eligibility of young people (they must be aged 11-18, MYPs must stand down on their 19th bithday), direct and indirect elections etc. Quick reminder that its not possible to swap/flip all MYPs around after 1 year. This doesn't affect replacing a MYP who resigns during their term.

In the Rulebook you'll find the MYP Election rules on pages 22-25 and your 2022-24 MYP allocation on pages 71-77.

2024-26 MYP allocations are being reviewed before the next elections. The Office of National Statistics publishes new population data at end of September/early October. For context, approx 8 (from 120) LAs were affected following the last population data and last MYP allocation review.

Particularly, useful if you're new/relatively new to running elections/Make Your Mark and aren’t sure where to start
