Get active against age discrimination.
The British Youth Council is part of Young Equals - a group of charities and children and young people who are campaigning to stop age discrimination.
There are many examples of children and young people experiencing unfair and harmful treatment because of their age. For example, not being allowed in shops or public places or the installation of Mosquito devices that deter deter teenagers by giving out a high-pitched noise.
More than four in ten children and young people have experienced unfair treatment because of their age (43%).
Age discrimination is the most common form of unfair treatment against young people.
Young people in their mid-teens are more likely to experience age discrimination (64% of 16-17 year olds).
Statistics from UK Government report to the UN Committee on the rights of the child, July 2007.
Young Equals have been Making the Case (find all our arguments here) for an extension of legal protection of under-18s from such age discrimination as the Government's Equality Bill has been debated in Parliament.
Young people tell MPs: Don't shut out young people from protection.
Young people involved with Young Equals wrote to their MPs while the Equality Bill was being discussed in Parliament to highlight its failure to protect under 18s from age discrimination.
Over a 120 MPs were told by young people that shutting under-18s out from protection in the Equality Bill leaves them open to harmful age discrimination.
