The British Youth Council are recruiting a team of media spokespeople compromising of Youth Councillors, Young Mayors and Members of Youth Parliament and another team compromising of young leaders from our national members.

The team of media spokespeople will become the face of the British Youth Council when we respond to national and regional media on issues such as lowering the voting age, statutory sex education and citizenship and any other issue in the news.

APPLICATION PROCESS

What do you need to apply?

  • You need to be a serving elected Youth Councillor, Young Mayor or Member of Youth Parliament.
  • Your local authority needs to be a Youth Voice member of the British Youth Council.
  • You need to have filled in a Youth Voice Registration Form for 2016/ 17.
  • Your parent/ guardian need to have given you permission to take part in media work within your Youth Voice Registration Form.
  • Your Local Authorities support and signature. (If your local authority is unable to sign they must submit a written email from their local authority email address)

What do I need to submit?

What kind of work will I be asked to do?

  • Take part in TV and radio interviews (both pre-recorded and live)
  • Interviews with journalists for online article and print newspapers.
  • Writing blogs for the British Youth Council or publishers such as Buzzfeed, The Guardian and the Huffington Post.
  • Writing statements for press releases on key events and campaign milestones.

Will I get any training?

No formal training will be offered to spokespeople outside of London and Manchester but we will send you guidance and top tips. Not to mention the brief you'll receive before you take part in any interview.

However, we are offering training for those in Manchester and London, as the media centres of the UK. Please be aware the media training session is due to take place on Saturday 20th May 2017.

How much time am I expected to commit?

We don't expect you to give up lots of your time, however, it is hard to predict how many media requests we'll get. Some weeks we get eight or nine other weeks just two.
